Invisalign has risen in popularity as an effective alternative to braces. It doesn’t use any metal, but rather clear plastic trays that you wear for 22 hours every day. You might’ve started your own treatment and are enjoying your time with them. However, have you noticed your trays are starting to turn yellow? Here’s why this can happen and what you can do to keep them nearly invisible.
Why Is My Invisalign Starting to Turn Yellow?
It’s first important to find out the culprit of what’s tinting your Invisalign. These are a few common reasons:
- Plaque that hardens on your aligners can turn yellow.
- Saliva can dry on your trays and slowly discolor them.
- Colored mouthwash may get trapped between them and your teeth if you use it while they are in.
- Drinking any beverages is like the point above, plus with the added risk of cavities. So only stick to water.
Can I Get Rid of the Stains on My Aligners?
When you find out which one above is true for you, then you can adjust your aligner routine to avoid any trouble. With that said, if you already have yellow tinting, there are ways you can lessen it. You can brush your trays with a soft-bristle toothbrush and a water and white vinegar mixture or diluted hydrogen peroxide. They can reduce the severity but may not get rid of it fully.
What Can I Do to Prevent My Trays from Staining?
Although your current set of Invisalign might’ve discolored, you will need to swap to a new pair relatively soon. Once you do, you will get back the nearly invisible look. You should then try your best to also avoid staining them. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Do your oral hygiene routine after eating to stop plaque from transferring.
- Don’t forget to clean your trays after every meal. You can use special crystals as well.
- Don’t eat or drink anything other than water, as foods and drinks can damage them or make them turn yellow.
Stick to these tips, and you can help your Invisalign stay clear. That way, you can feel confident knowing they will stay discreet while getting the straighter smile you love.
