The good news is that while it may require some adjustments, yes, you still can play a wind instrument during orthodontic treatment. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Wax On

When you blow into an instrument such as a trumpet or flute, your lips put pressure on your teeth, which naturally pushes on your braces. This can be uncomfortable at first, especially if there are any pressure points where the wires and brackets stick out further in certain areas. Thus, to keep your mouth comfortable, use dental wax to cushion the areas that hurt when you’re playing. These spots may change as your teeth shift and your wires are adjusted, so be prepared to make adjustments to the location and amount of wax you use as your treatment continues.

Tongue Shifts

Another tip for playing a wind instrument is adjusting the position of your tongue. This may be required if your child wears an expander, but once they find the right spot, playing will be a lot easier.

Practice Makes Perfect

You already practiced your instrument before braces, and nothing will change there, but once you start your orthodontic treatment you may need to devote a little extra time to your instrument as you figure out the best way to play comfortably. Rest assured that it will get easier the more time you put into it, just like when you were first learning to play the instrument itself!

Adjust Your Breathing

Finally, if you play a woodwind instrument, chances are you will need to use more breath than you did prior to braces. Be prepared to up your air intake as you play and allow yourself a little extra time to get the hang of it so you can keep up with the rest of your bandmates during practice and for your next performance!

Remember, braces are a temporary treatment for a healthier, more beautiful smile. With a little practice, persistence, and skill, you’ll be able to play your instrument with ease while wearing them. Hopefully, these tips will help make doing so a lot more comfortable!

About Dr. Fitzgerald

Dr. Alison Fitzgerald loves being able to make a positive impact on her patients’ oral health and helping them reclaim their beautiful smiles.
