Not only does it become harder to eat, speak, and smile, but your self-confidence can also suffer as a result. Fortunately, your dentist can restore your grin’s appearance and functionality with dentures!

Although this versatile solution is made from durable materials, it’s not intended to last forever. There’s a good chance that, eventually, you’ll need a new set of artificial teeth. If you’ve had your prosthetics for several years already and aren’t sure whether they’re nearing the end of their lifespan, it’s natural to wonder what signs to look for. Keep reading to learn about 3 indicators that it’s time for new dentures!

Sign #1: They’re Loose

Your dentures are created from scratch to fit your mouth specifically so that they can easily suction to your gums and remain in place. However, once you’ve lost permanent teeth, your body resorbs mass from your jawbone that’s no longer needed to support them. As it thins, your prosthetics that once fit like a glove start to become loose because there’s less structure to hold onto. If they tend to slip out of place when you’re chewing or talking, or they make an audible clicking sound, then it’s probably time to talk to your doctor about being fitted with a fresh restoration.

Sign #2: They’re Broken

There are two main components to your dentures: the base and the pontics, or artificial teeth. Usually, the base is made of acrylic that’s colored that’s carved to look like your gums, while the pontics are usually made from durable porcelain. Although these materials can potentially last for 5 to 10 years, they’re not totally invincible. Something as simple as eating foods that are too hard or crunchy could chip or crack your dentures, which gives bacteria a place to thrive. This kind of damage leaves you with an increased risk of developing gum disease. On top of that, you might get sores if they no longer fit properly. You should contact your dentist to repair or replace your restoration if it’s been harmed.

Sign #3: They’re Flawed

Refurbishing your grin with dentures can boost your confidence because you’ll look and feel more like you did prior to tooth loss. However, if they’re stained, broken, or worn down, then you might start to worry about your appearance. Anxiety over how you’ll be perceived could leave you so self-conscious that you avoid spending time with other people. If your artificial teeth are detracting from your appearance, it’s worth talking with your provider about getting new ones.

If you’re no longer able to enjoy the many benefits of having dentures, let your dentist know so that they can start the process to once again restore your smile.

About the Author

Dr. Alison Fitzgerald has nearly 15 years of experience helping people of all ages boost their self-esteem by enhancing their dental health.
